NEWS: 2019 Yaoi Anime

2018 has staggered to a close, and pushed newborn 2019 straight out into the traffic in its rush. We live in a confusing time. Amidst political discord threatening upheaval of democratic values around the globe and impending environmental doom, it’s hard to say what the new year will bring. But remember, there is good in this world, and that good is a thing called yaoi.

Papa Datte, Shitai (パパだって、したい) is our first contender, rolling in for the 2019 winter season and debuting its first episode this week.

Just to clarify, no, this is not an incest story. The premise is simple and sweet: Kouya Asumi, a college fourth-year student, gets a gig as the housekeeper of Keiichi Naruse, a single father with an adorable toddler son. As you’d naturally expect, sparks fly and pants drop. Episodes are only 5 minutes long, but there will be two versions: presumably a sexy version, and a sexier version. And beyond the smut, it’s a cute and relatively progressive step forward for the BL genre to posit a two-dad family, so you can watch it for purely academic reasons, too.

There isn’t much confirmed for the year in either the yaoi or yuri circuit, but we sure won’t be left dry this year, either. A few other winter updates:

  • No word yet on the release date of the anime adaptation of the popular BL manga Ten Count. We won’t see it this winter, but it could have a later 2019 release date.
  • Double Decker! Doug & Kirill finished its fall 2018 run this month, and while there’s no word yet on an official second season, we will get three bonus episodes this winter.
  • Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku: is also getting a bonus OVA! It’ll focus on Hanako and Kabakura’s high school days, but yaoi fans should get a nod through Hanako as a card-carrying fujoshi (and possibly a little bonus yuri love through Kabakura’s own otaku inclinations).
  • Though rumors had suggested we would see it sometime this winter, the release date for the Yuri on Ice movie has yet to be announced.

In short, if your New Year’s resolution was to watch more gay anime, we got you covered, fam.
