NEWS: 2019 Yaoi Anime

2018 has staggered to a close, and pushed newborn 2019 straight out into the traffic in its rush. We live in a confusing time. Amidst political discord threatening upheaval of democratic values around the globe and impending environmental doom, it’s hard to say what the new year will bring. But remember, there is good in this world, and that good is a thing called yaoi.

Papa Datte, Shitai (パパだって、したい) is our first contender, rolling in for the 2019 winter season and debuting its first episode this week.

Review: DAKAICHI – I’m being harassed by the sexiest man of the year (Episode 2)

DAKAICHI – I’m being harassed by the sexiest man of the year | (抱男1位に脅されています (Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu)
Episode 2:
Is He Sick of Me Already? | あいつ、もう俺に飽きやがったのか?

It’s an unfortunate truth that not every 18+ erotic yaoi manga gets adapted into a BL anime. Sometimes, it’s for a reason. Sometimes, that reason is seeing this stuff acted and animated gets really weird, really quick.

So with that, it’s time for Dakaichi Episode 2.

REVIEW: DAKAICHI – I’m being harassed by the sexiest man of the year (Episode 1)

DAKAICHI – I’m being harassed by the sexiest man of the year | (抱かれたい男1位に脅されています (Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu)
Episode 1:
In the World of Show Business, It’s Eat or Be Eaten
Release: 2018

Big reveal: the official English title of Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu, the latest BL manga-turned-anime, is Dakaichi – I’m being harassed by the sexiest man of the year, earning a spot in the ranks of currently trending long-sentence anime titles. What a mouthful.

The curtains open on our top two thespian bachelors in the Japanese entertainment industry. Takato Saijō, a cool and conniving A-list actor since childhood, knows how to play the game. He has carefully cultivated his public appearance to maximize his celebrity appeal, and viciously cuts down the opposition in the process. His handsome looks and top-notch acting skills have earned an array of accolades. But his most treasured achievement is his five-year streak of being voted “Most Huggable Man” in an annual fan poll in some random gossip magazine.

But his world comes crashing down around him when a younger and less experienced actor, Junta Azumaya, beats him in this year’s “Most Huggable” poll, knocking him down to a humiliating second place. What’s worse is the pair have been cast to act together in an upcoming movie, and Junta, not Takato, will be playing the lead.

Ready, and action! (Yes, you’d better believe that’s innuendo.)

REVIEW: Hitorijime My Hero

Hitorijime My Hero | ひとりじめマイヒーロー
Release: 2017

Here it is, the gay teacher-student romance you were never sure if it was legal to ask for. Hitorijime My Hero combines the plots of two BL manga (“Hitorijime My Boyfriend” and “Hitorijime My Hero“) to tell the story of not one uncomfortable romantic pairing, but two, with a star-studded cast including a teenage “delinquent” (intentional scare quotes), a predatory math teacher slash vigilante street fighter, a derpy prepubescent best friend, and a total bitch of a human being with zero redeemable qualities beyond being an ikemen.

…and other killer teacher-student pickup lines.

All right, for better or worse, we’re doing this. Let’s talk about the gay.

NEWS: Fall 2018 Anime to Look For

Summer is coming to an end. We are in the last throes of what could have been the perfect relationship: at first, it was sweet. Coy. Full of ambition and teasing dreams of what we could accomplish. The weeks flew by in a lazy haze, until we sat up in July with the dreadful sense of momento mori. In late August, it slips away from our grasp, losing interest in us day by day, and we are left older. Deader. Alone.

But you’re not alone in the fall. Not really. You’ll never be alone as long as there is gay anime to look forward to.

Cheer up! Here’s two upcoming anime to watch out for, on the house.

DakaretaiThe #1 Huggable Man Is Threatening Me (Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu |抱かれたい男1位に脅されています):

An anime adaptation of Hashigo Sakurabi’s popular BL series. Protagonist Saijou Takato is an idol the reigning champion of the competitive “Most Huggable Man” title. But everything changes when new actor Azumaya steals the crown. How will Saijou reclaim his throne?

This sounds so shamelessly dumb, which could make it awesome in the best ways. Let’s watch it together in October 2018.

bloom into you

BLOOM INTO YOU (Yagate Kimi ni Naru | やがて君になる):

Based on Nio Nakatani’s GL manga series. Shoujo lover Yuu Koito wants to experience love like in the comics, but feels nothing when a male classmate offers her his love confession. She consults student council president Touko Nanami for romance advice, and bonding with her over their mutual lack of interest in boys leads Yuu to realize she may be falling for Nanami instead.

What is it with yuri stories and student council presidents? Join me in researching this very important question October 2018.

In other words, your run-of-the-mill saccharine yuri and delightfully depraved yaoi. Or not. I have no idea, I haven’t read either manga, but these two seem to be the vanguard of this fall’s gay battalions. And if they suck, at least we’ll still have more Banana Fish to look forward to!
